In 1984, Jim Koch had a dream of creating his own microbrewery. At the time, he had only desire on his side. No banks or distributors wanted to back his beer. Koch was undaunted and began brewing beer in his kitchen, and then he distributed it bar-to-bar. The beer, Samuel Adams, caught on and now its 30-plus flavors are brewed in Boston, Cincinnati and Lehigh, Pa.

Jim Koch, founder and owner of Boston Beer Co., likes to help the little guys because he still considers himself one of them despite the success of Samuel Adams beers. "When I started, I was the little guy and sort of still see myself as the underdog," Koch said in a telephone interview last week. "Even today, 25 years later, we are still very much the underdog. We are not even 1 percent of the U.S. beer market. It's 0.9 percent. We compete with giants, and I know what it's like to be the underdog, because I live it every day."

The new sign was made possible with help from the nation's leading craft brewer, James Koch (pronounced "Cook") of Boston Beer Co., maker of Sam Adams beer.
